In discussion with Quentin, it turned out that the behavior I was seeing only applies in Firefox on the Mac -- not Safari, and not Linux Firefox. And it's distinct from the framebuffer issue.

    18#43 was to document the fact that when the framebuffer is on, the VNC applet fails to redisplay properly.  Even better would be to fix that.
